A recent divorce is getting a lot of media attention as it highlights a white nationalist and his abusive marriage. White nationalist leader Richard Spencer is facing accusations of domestic violence amid a nasty divorce from his wife, Nina Koupriianova. Koupriianova is accusing Spencer of abusing her physically, verbally, and emotionally. She outlined everything in a 78-page court filing in June in Montana.

Koupriianova documented the abuse in several forms, including emails, photos, conversations, and a chat with the National Domestic Violence Hotline. She claims that the abuse was prevalent throughout their eight-year marriage—even while she was pregnant. She had been too afraid to go to the police previously because she was afraid of retaliation.

In a court brief, Koupriianova described in detail incidents involving her being dragged by her hair, grabbed and hit by Spencer. In one incident in 2011, she was dragged out of bed by her arms and legs and down the stairs. She was then thrown onto a couch and left with bruises. In 2012, she was on the floor when Spencer smashed her head into the ground.

Koupriianova was also attacked and bruised in 2014 while four months pregnant. Spencer had gotten on top of her and held her jaw and neck. In 2017, while his wife was nine months pregnant, Spencer entered her home and proceeded to punch her in the face. She was due to give birth via C-section just two days later. In February 2018, Spencer grabbed Koupriianova and pulled her by her hair in a parking lot as their 3-year-old daughter watched. Koupriianova attempted to record the incident with her smartphone, but Spencer and his mother confiscated it and erased the recording.

On top of all that, Spencer had insulted and bullied Koupriianova on numerous occasions. He called her a “leech” and an “ugly, spiteful, horrible woman” multiple times.

Spencer, however, denies the claims. He claims that he is not an abusive person and that his wife’s accusations are false, particularly the ones that involve his children. The couple has two young children. They were married in 2010 and have been living apart since July 2017.

Koupriianova was also concerned about Spencer’s political activities. Spencer became popular during the 2016 election and was involved in the white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville in 2017. He often participates in public speeches promoting his alt-right views, which include white nationalism, anti-Semitism, and other extremist opinions. Many of his rallies have erupted in violence. Spencer was punched in the face in a viral video once and is known to keep a loaded pistol in the house.
